And they are now looking to the Lisbon club for a player to help fill the space left by Everton.
According to reports, Gremio want Benfica winger Franco Cervi – news which has now been confirmed.
Speaking on Caju Tricolor, Gremio president Romildo Bolzan Jr. admitted the Brazilian side are hoping to do a deal for Cervi.
“Cervi is on our list,” said Bolzan Jr. “He has a contract with Benfica and is not playing. He is an important player and had a great time at Rosario Central.
“We know him well. We’ve made an appointment to see if we can move forward. But we are still far from having presented a formal offer.”
26-year-old Cervi, a four-time Argentine international, is under contract at Benfica until 2023.
He has a €60m release clause, but his current market value is around €8m.
Benfica would prefer to sell Cervi on a permanent deal than loan him out.
Cervi joined Benfica from Rosario Central in 2015 and since moving to Portugal a year later has made 151 appearances, scoring 20 goals.
However, he has yet to feature for Jorge Jesus’ side this season and for the right price could leave.
