32-year-old Coentrao announced his retirement from professional football while in COURT in January.
He had most recently spent the 2018-19 season playing for Rio Ave, a year in which he amassed 11 yellow and two red cards.
Having not found a new team for the start of the 2019-20 campaign, Coentrao called it quits.
But Rio Ave have announced that the 52-time Portugal international is back for a fourth spell.
Real Madrid splashed out €30m in July 2011 to sign Coentrao from Benfica after his electric performances for the Lisbon club.
In total, he made 106 appearances for Los Blancos, but injuries began to hamper his game time and performances.
Following several loan spells, Coentrao’s contract with Madrid ran out, leading to his move to Rio Ave in 2018.
He will now again play for the Vilacondenses, adding more quality to Mario Silva’s squad for the 2020-21 season.
