Mundo Deportivo reports that there is a full agreement between Suarez and Atletico over a two-year deal.
Diego Simeone wants the 33-year-old at the Wanda Metropolitano and it had seemed like an impossible dream until recently.
But with Suarez’s proposed move to Juventus falling through over passport issues, Atleti were given the opening they needed.
Barcelona want to offload Suarez and are willing to make a financial effort to make it happen.
Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin and coach Simeone are in ‘permanent contact’ with Suarez.
Not an easy deal
However, there are still a few obstacles in the way of Suarez moving to Madrid.
Firstly, he is at loggerheads with Barca over his pay-off, with the Uruguayan wanting the full wages for the last year of his contract.
Another problem is that Barcelona do not want to let Suarez go for free. Atletico do not want to pay a transfer fee for Suarez.
Lastly, Atletico need to sell Diego Costa to create a space for Suarez.
Finding a taker for Costa is not easy because of his high salary (around €8m-per-season) and there have been no offers.
Gerard Romero of RAC1 says Barcelona and Suarez have now reached an agreement to rescind his contract.
Suarez will give up part of his salary in exchange for being allowed to leave for free.
