According to BILD, 22-year-old Baku is being courted by Wolfsburg and is ‘very interested’ in joining them.
Mainz sporting director Rouven Schröder has already been in contact with Wolfsburg, although he hopes to keep Baku.
“We want to bring a strong and competitive team to the pitch!” said Schröder. “And that definitely includes Ridle Baku! He has a contract with us until 2022 and is a Mainz home-grown player.”
Baku wants move
Despite Schröder’s stance, Baku has been aiming for a move for several months and feels ready for a new challenge.
A few weeks ago Baku even changed agencies to try and faciliate a transfer away from Mainz.
Baku would be a logical signing for Wolfsburg because they are missing William (cruciate ligament tear) and Kevin Mbabu (knee) on the right side.
The problem for Die Wölfe is other clubs are fully aware of their need for a right-back, which could lead to them having to pay an inflated fee.
Mainz need money and with Jean-Philippe Mateta and Moussa Niakhate still not close to leaving, could cash in on Baku if the right amount is offered.
It is unclear how much Mainz would want for Baku, who is valued at €7m by the Transfermarkt site.
