Harit, 23, had an impressive 2019-20 season with Schalke, with seven goals and as many assists in all competitions.
He is both young and experienced, having played in the Champions League and at the 2018 World Cup.
And that combination of features makes him the exact type of player Atalanta are known to sign.
Sky Italia report that Harit would like to join Atalanta, but the two clubs must first find an agreement.
Schalke value Harit, who can play as an attacking midfielder or winger, at €20m.
The Germans paid €8m to sign him from Nantes in the summer of 2017 and believe he is worth more than double that now.
Harit chose to represent Morocco over his birthplace France and has gone on to make 10 appearances for Les Lions de l’Atlas.
