Marega, 29, has goal returns of 23, 21 and 15 in the past three seasons for Porto and would give Newcastle added firepower.
The Mali international is shielded by a €30m release clause, with Porto asking for €20m to sell him.
Newcastle are currently willing to pay €15m and it remains to be seen if that is enough for a deal to be done.
Marega has told Porto that he doesn’t want to extend his contract and dreams of playing in the Premier League.
His current deal expires next June, so there could be hope for Newcastle on this front.
Vlachodimos back on the radar
26-year-old Vlachodimos has been linked with Newcastle several times now, most recently in May.
Steve Bruce is on the look-out for a new goalkeeper after Martin Dubravka was ruled out for two months.
Newcastle have contacted Benfica to learn the conditions that could allow Vlachodimos to move to England.
However, Benfica’s high asking price is putting off Newcastle, who would want to pay much less for the Greek international.
Vlachodimos is under contract at Benfica until 2024 and has a prohibitive €60m release clause.
