Lacroix, 20, is a France under-20 international and has been a regular feature for Sochaux in Ligue 2.
He has joined Wolfsburg for around €5m, following another promising youngster, Bartosz Bialek, to the German club.
The tall (1.90m) centre-back said Wolfsburg was the right place to continue his development.
“I’m really looking forward to this new challenge at VfL and of playing in the Bundesliga,” Lacroix said. “The conditions here in Wolfsburg are great, I really like the stadium and right from my first visit, I knew that I had come to the right place and that it would be the best place to continue my development.
“The first thing I want to do now is to get settled in and get to know my new team-mates and the whole new environment.
“I’ll be working hard from the off to play as many games as possible and to be successful with VfL.”
The club’s sporting director Marcel Schäfer said Lacroix is another example of their strategy to buy young talent.
“Maxence is another logical next step in bringing talented young and hungry players to Wolfsburg who can then develop to a higher level with us and take the next step in their careers,” he said. “He’s got everything he needs to establish himself in the Bundesliga.”
