21-year-old Upamecano showed his talent on the biggest stage in Leipzig’s Champions League quarter-final win over Atletico Madrid.
Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane has had Upamecano on his radar for a years and was impressed by the level he showed against Atleti.
Upamecano recently renewed his contract at Leipzig with a €45m release clause that takes effect next summer.
This suits Real Madrid, who have financial limits this summer and do not plan to make any major signings.
Next year, €45m will be an acceptable price for Los Blancos and less than they paid to sign Eder Militao from Porto.
All these ingredients make Upamecano the main objective to strengthen Madrid’s backline.
Madrid’s club captain Sergio Ramos is now 34-years-old and Nacho turned 30 in January.
With Raphael Varane (27) and Militao (22), Upamecano would secure the defence for years to come.
