Fofana, 25, said at the start of August that he plans to leave Udinese after ‘four beautiful years’.
“I am very interested [in joining Lens],” said Fofana. “I had the chance to talk to the directors and some players I knew at Bastia like Leca and Cahuzac. And they convinced me straight away.
“I haveve received many offers, but my decision was made immediately. I asked myself what I really want and that was a return to France.
“Lens, the Stade Bollaert, the supporters. They have always remained loyal despite the relegation. Things like this speak to me. It’s a very big club, it didn’t deserve to be in this place.
“I hope the two clubs can reach an agreement soon. I have made my choice and my choice is Lens.”
Lens finished second in the 2019-20 Ligue 2 season, earning them promotion back to France’s top-flight.
And if they can agree terms with Udinese, they will be bolstered by a midfielder of proven quality.
Fofana has made 119 appearances for Udinese since arriving from Man City, scoring 13 and assisting 12 goals.
