Niang, 25, is eager to leave Rennes for a bigger club and Marseille had a firm interest in him.
However, Villas-Boas’ priorities have changed and in an interview with La Provence on Wednesday, he made that clear.
“We were contacted by his agent in February, because Andoni (Zubizarreta, the club’s sporting director until May) had a good relationship with him,” said Villas-Boas.
“I let the player’s entourage know that we are not after him, we have not made an offer.
“We have neither the means nor the interest to bring him in. It’s not because he does not have the qualities, but because we do not have the capacities and are looking for another profile.”
The former AC Milan talent joined Rennes last year for €15m following a successful loan spell from Italian side Torino.
In his two seasons at the club, he has scored 21 goals in 55 Ligue 1 games.
