In a recent interview with Telefoot, club president Jean-Michel Aulas confirmed the two European giants had wanted Cherki.
“He [Cherki] is good enough to go to the highest level,” said Aulas. “We made sure we signed him because Real Madrid and Manchester United both wanted him.
“We want him to be a star here, we will support him and help him to progress his career here and be the leader of our attack.”
Despite being just 16, Cherki made 12 appearances for Lyon’s first team this season, including a start against PSG.
Cherki is eligible for France and Algeria, but has so far chosen to represent Les Bleus at youth level.
