The 19-year-old is already an Ecuador international and European scouts have been buzzing about him.
Leipzig reportedly contacted Sporting on Sunday morning to discuss the conditions of a possible deal for Plata.
Sporting responded immediately by telling the Germans that €45m would be their starting point for negotiations.
Plata, who is predominantly a right winger, is shielded by release clause of €60m at the Lisbon club.
Despite the high asking price, Record states that Leipzig were not scared off as Plata fits the profile they look for.
Leipzig’s recruitment strategy is to buy young players capable of high-level performances in the medium term.
However, Sporting do not intend to let their young super-talent go for anything close to that, even in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic.
Despite the harassment of European clubs, Sporting are planning for next season with Plata in the side.
Plata has started to feature more in Liga NOS since the start of 2020, making 14 appearances in Portugal’s top flight this term.
Leipzig ask about Balde
A different Portuguese newspaper is reporting on Leipzig’s interest in another of Sporting’s pearls.
Balde has been on loan at second division side Feirense this season and is under contract at Sporting until 2023.
A Portuguese youth international, Balde could feature more in Sporting’s first team next season.
