According to SPORT1, the German club had planned to sign a top striker before Haaland’s emergence.
19-year-old Haaland, who has scored 14 goals in 16 appearances this season, is BVB’s golden boy but they need another option in case he gets injured or tired.
Sporting director Michael Zorc and chief scout Markus Pilawa were very interested in Celtic star Odsonne Edouard.
They held talks for Edouard but that was before Haaland’s arrived and Celtic’s €30m asking price is too much for a backup.
Napoli’s Arkadiusz Milik was also considered, but he would be in a similar price bracket to Edouard.
A more realistic target is a youngster who Dortmund have held an interest in for some time.
BVB’s next Haaland?
Macias scored 13 goals in 29 appearances in the 2019-20 season and a big move looks to be on the horizon.
The Guadalajara-born forward recently broke into the Mexican national team, already scoring four goals in five games.
He is not quite as advanced in his development as Haaland or Edouard because he hasn’t played in Europe.
But Dortmund are famed for their player development and Macias would cost less than Edouard or Milik.
BVB held talks with Guadalajara over a €15m to €20m deal for Macias before the Coronavirus outbreak.
Due to the economic impact of the pandemic, Dortmund feel they could perhaps get the price down to €10m.
However, the young Swede is happy in Spain, where he has scored 17 goals this season, and isn’t interested in a Bundesliga return.
