The 32-year-old, who made a name for himself at Schalke, was troubled by the uncertainty resulting from the Coronavirus.
And he has asked the Russian club to rescind his contract, which was due to run until 2021.
He has made 50 appearances in all competitions for Lokomotiv, scoring four goals.
The 44-cap Germany international has no new club lined up, with his focus currently on family matters.
Lokomotiv Moscow have now officially announced Howedes’ departure from the club.
FC Lokomotiv can confirm @BeneHoewedes will be leaving the club.
