Because of Roma’s large debt, it was expected they would lose Smalling at the end of the season.
However, the Giallorossi are pressing to try and find an arrangement with Man United that will let them keep Smalling.
According to Il Tempo on Saturday, Roma have made a new €3m paid loan offer, with an obligation to buy the former England defender for €14m.
Added to the €3m loan fee paid last summer, this would meet United’s €20m valuation.
Il Tempo states that talks have been non-stop in recent weeks, with Smalling wanting to continue his Serie A adventure.
Within Roma, there is optimism that a deal can be done to keep Smalling in the capital.
Smalling has been a key performer for Paulo Fonseca this season, making 28 appearances in all competitions.
