The 30-year-old has spent the season on loan in France, becoming a key player for Andre Villas-Boas’ team.
However, Marseille president Jacques-Henri Eyraud told AFP (via Marca) that Gonzalez will continue at the Velodrome.
“Alvaro will be with us next season,” Eyraud said.
The defender’s form helped Marseille qualify for the Champions League for the first time in six years.
The loan deal included a compulsory purchase option after five games, a landmark reached last October.
Any remaining doubts about Gonzalez’s future have now been cleared up by the Marseille president.
Villarreal will pocket €4m for Gonzalez and will look to reinvest that in another central defender.
