The 30-year-old defender belongs to Villarreal but spent the season on loan at Marseille in France.
Gonzalez’s performances under Andre Villas-Boas have been good, leading to 20 appearances in Ligue 1.
The player was brought in by sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta, but in recent days Zubi has left Marseille.
Marseille’s plan was to sign Gonzalez on a permanent deal, but economic doubts seem to have scuppered that.
Betis look to take advantage
And according to Estadio Deportivo, that has brought in Betis who sense an opportunity.
Marseille’s option to buy Gonzalez is set at €4m plus bonuses, which Betis are able to pay.
The Andalusians see Gonzalez as a great reinforcement to alleviate the possible departures of Zouhair Feddal and Lyon-linked Aïssa Mandi.
Betis and Villarreal must also work out the future of winger Alfonso Pedraza who has spent the season on loan at Betis.
Villarreal have given Betis the option to buy 24-year-old Pedraza for €10m plus bonuses.
Betis want to renegotiate this price and it was during talks that Álvaro González’s name came up, leading to this new opportunity for Los Verdiblancos.
